Meet Tuned UP’s NEW INTERN

Hello Everyone!

My name is Sydney Williams! I am the intern and newest addition to Tuned Up Music Therapy. I wanted to formally introduce myself, as well as give a little background information about who I am and where I come from.

I grew up in Anacoco (ANNA-COH-COH), Louisiana which is on the west central side of Vernon Parish, by the Toledo Bend Reservoir. I graduated from Anacoco High School in 2011. Soon after graduation, I went on a 1 month traveling choir tour to Europe. I started at Louisiana College in the Fall of 2011 as a Vocal Performance Major. I graduated from Louisiana College in May of 2015 with a Bachelors of Arts in Music with an Emphasis in Vocal Studies. In August of 2015 I began my studies toward the certification of Music Therapy.

I am currently studying Music Therapy at Saint Mary of the Woods College in Terre Haute, Indiana. It is a private college and I’ve been blessed to get to work on this certification online, while staying home. Through this experience i have traveled to different parts of Louisiana and South East Texas, learning more about Music Therapy through clinical observation.

I have been involved with music since I learned to speak, taking lessons in piano, and voice once in elementary school. I loved every minute of it. As I entered middle school and high school, Ibegan singing everywhere I could, the school choir, at church, festivals, rallies, recitals, and pageants, to name a few.  During my senior year of high school I decided to add the guitar to my list of Instruments. I learned quickly and caught on pretty fast, thanks to the piano and voice lessons.

When I am not studying I am still involved with music as a member of a local contemporary Christian band called “4 Days Late,” and a local ministry outreach program called “True Vision Ministries” all located in Vernon and Sabine Parish.  I also direct  the high school praise team at “Faith Training Christian Academy”, a private school in Vernon Parish.

I originally met Mrs. Julie at my first practicum (that’s a fancy term for clinical experience).  When contemplating where to apply for internships, Tuned Up was first on my list.  I felt a connection with Mrs. Julie from the beginning and appreciated her approach to offer tools and support before encouraging me to “dive in and swim” for myself.  I am enjoying my internship thus far and am grateful to serve uder a wonderful mentor who has becom a great friend and colleague.

During my internship I hope to gain the knowledge needed to one day open my own private practice, working as a contractor and within the school system.  Music Therapy is extremely beneficial in all realms of development, in particular, expression, relaxation, educational support, socialization, general functioning in society, and so much more. Our world is influenced by Music. And it is my wish to influence the world in a more positive note through the use of music.

I am looking forward to the future as I continue to work and gain wisdom and insight with Mrs. Julie at Tuned Up.

Sydney Williams,

Tuned UP Music Therapy Intern

We’re too BIG for our britches!

Growing up, this was a phrase I heard a lot. “Now, young lady… you’re getting a little too big for your britches.” Each time it meant something different, either I was getting ahead of myself or being overconfident, which brings to mind other cliche phrases (counting your chickens before they hatch, putting the cart before the horse…). The list goes on. Well, now that I’m all grown up it means something completely different and I am overjoyed to say that Tuned Up Music Therapy is finally too big for it’s britches. And therefore, WE ARE MOVING!

We have officially outgrown our small studio and will be moving into a larger clinic space in September. Our new space is beyond wonderful. We will have a sensory room, one large and two small therapy spaces, a room specifically for our Music Together classes, and even a “junk” room of sorts where we will create our newest activities and lesson plans.

With our larger space, the sky is the limit for us! We hope to offer many community events in the future, such as Parent Nights Out, Sensory Friendly Trick or Treating for Halloween, Christmas Caroling, and dare I say, a possible FROZEN sing-a-long, just to name a few.

Thank you so much to all of our little “Looney Tunes” and their families for making this a possibility and fueling our growth. The BIGGER the better, we say!!

Details and pics COMING SOON!
